Capture and Sequestration of CO2 From Stationary Combustion Systems by Photosynthesis of Microalgae

چکیده
Emissions of carbon dioxide are predicted to increase this century leading to increases in the concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. While there is still much debate on the effects of increased CO2 levels on global climate, many scientists agree that the projected increases could have a profound effect on the environment. Most of the anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide result from the combustion of fossil fuels for energy production. It is the increased demand for energy, particularly in the developing world, which underlies the projected increase in CO2 emissions. Meeting this demand without huge increases in CO2 emissions requires more than merely increasing the efficiency of energy production. Carbon sequestration, capturing and storing carbon emitted from the global energy system, could be a major tool for reducing atmospheric CO2 emissions from fossil fuel usage.

Biorefineries of carbon dioxide: From carbon capture and storage (CCS) to bioenergies production.
Greenhouse gas emissions have several adverse environmental effects, like pollution and climate change. Currently applied carbon capture and storage (CCS) methods are not cost effective and have not been proven safe for long term sequestration. Another attractive approach is CO2 valorization, whereby CO2 can be captured in the form of biomass via photosynthesis and is subsequently converted int...

An economic and environmentally friendly approach of overcoming the problem of fossil CO2 emissions would be to reuse it through fixation into biomass. Carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the basis for the formation of complex sugars by green plants and microalgae through photosynthesis, has been shown to significantly increase the growth rates of certain microalgal species. Microalgae possess a gre...

CO2 fixation by photoautotrophic algal cultures has the potential to diminish the release of CO2 into the atmosphere, helping alleviate the trend toward global warming. To realize workable biological CO2 fixation systems, selection of optimal microalgae species is vital. The selection of optimal microalgae species depends on specific strategies employed for CO2 sequestration. In this paper, the...
